Global airline capacity for December 2009 shows positive growth compared to December 2008, reports OAG, the world's leading aviation data business with its monthly report on trends in the supply of airline flights and seats. There are 294.8 million seats available this month, a rise of 4% over December 2008 levels. Global frequencies are up 1% compared to December 2008, with a total of 2.4 million flights scheduled for December 2009, despite an average North American frequency decline of 2%. Worldwide, frequencies and capacity in the low cost sector are both up by 10% compared to a year ago, accounting for 444,539 flights (18%) and 65.6 million seats (22%). Ryanair  today (8th Dec 09) announced that it will add four new Boeing 737-800 aircraft (12 in total) and open 6 new routes (57 in total) from its Charleroi base to Ibiza, Kaunas, Krakow, Nador, Seville and Zadar from March 2010. This brings Ryanair's investment in harleroi to twelve aircraft. 

These six new routes  will increase Ryanair's annual traffic at Charleroi to over 4 million passengers. The low cost airline confirmed that the Belgian Government's decision to reverse its "Flight Tax" has been a key driver of this record growth.

Ryanair's CEO, Michael O'Leary, was in Brussels today to announce the news himself. The CEO said that "Charleroi is now the model for how efficient low cost airports should operate and an example to the Irish and UK Governments which continue to preside over collapsing passenger traffic due to high cost airports and suicidal tourist taxes."

Both Brussels Airlines and Austrian Airlines have developed special offers for the clients of Sky Europe, who are blocked on a European airport after Sky Europe went bust yesterday.

Clients and travel agents can contact Brussels Airlines and Austrian for further information. A spokesperson of Brussels Airlines confirmed that the special offers will not undercut any of the lowest existing tariffs of the carrier, as this would be discriminating their own clients.

We can only applaud this initiative by “real”, serious companies to minimize the damage done by cowboys and dreamers.

Sky Europe heeft maandag 31 augustus het faillissement aangevraagd. Wie de geschiedenis van het bedrijf kent, is niet verbaasd. Wij ontdekten evenwel links naar de Belgische luchtvaartindustrie, en zelfs indirect naar de Belgische belastingbetaler. Daarover waren we wel een beetje verbaasd.

British Airways heeft een nieuwe manier gevonden om kosten te besparen. Een maand geleden vroeg CEO Willie Walsh zijn personeel om gedurende een beperkte periode gratis te komen werken. Vandaag heeft het management van British Airways weer een geniale inval: vanaf maandag 3 Augustus zal de luchtvaartmaatschappij stoppen met het serveren van gratis maaltijden op short haul vluchten. Niet  binnen een paar maanden, of vanaf volgend jaar: na het week-end.
